Coach Jon Borrows trained directly under Eddie Bravo, founder of the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system. With over twenty years on the mats and an IBJJF No-Gi Worlds bronze medal, he brings world-class, disciplined coaching to every kids class.
Born and raised locally, Coach Jon is dedicated to building confidence and resilience in Newark's youth. He teaches every kids class personally, ensuring your child learns proven techniques from a trusted, expert instructor in a safe and supportive environment.

KIDS JIU JITSU IN NEWARK & HEATH, AGES 5-14
Give your kids the tools to handle themselves under pressure. This program is not about breaking boards or chasing participation trophies. We focus on real skill, real confidence, and results they carry off the mat. Three age-specific groups: Little Ninjas (age 5, waitlist only), Kids (6–8), and Youth (9–14). Coach Jon personally teaches every kids class. Parents are always welcome to watch.

LITTLE NINJAS (AGE 5)
Coordination, listening skills, and basic movements. We build a foundation of focus while keeping them fully engaged on the mats.
KIDS (6-8)
Fundamental no-gi grappling in a safe, structured environment. Kids build real confidence through skill, learning to move, control, and compete at their own pace.
YOUTH (9-14)
Advanced drilling, live rolling, and competition-focused training. They build real fitness, sharpen their grappling game, and develop the mental toughness that carries into every area of life.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS
Beginners are protected. The mats are a safe, ego-free zone where your child can learn, make mistakes, and grow without fear of injury. Coach Jon is also SafeSport Certified, meeting the same abuse-prevention training standard used by USA Gymnastics, USA Swimming, and other Olympic-affiliated youth sports organizations.

MEET COACH JON
20+ years on the mats. A bronze medal at the IBJJF No-Gi Worlds as a brown belt. Promoted to black belt by Eddie Bravo himself on May 14, 2022. Coach Jon Borrows is the only Eddie Bravo black belt in Ohio. He is also SafeSport Certified, meeting national youth-safety training standards.
He opened 10th Planet Newark in Heath, Ohio in 2015 so local adults and kids could train real no-gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu without driving to Columbus. He teaches every kids class personally and he is on the mats with the adults every week coaching, rolling, and keeping the room sharp.
Jon was raised in Newark and graduated from Newark High School. The kids he coaches today are growing up in the same town he did, and he cares about every person who walks through the door. Book a free class and meet him on the mats.
ANSWERS FOR PARENTS
Does my child need experience to start?
No. Most of our students walk in as complete beginners. We start them with the basics, match them with good partners, and prioritize safety while they learn.
How is jiu jitsu different from other kids martial arts?
Many kids martial arts classes center on memorized forms and breaking boards. In jiu jitsu, kids practice every move with a partner who is really resisting, at a safe, controlled pace, so the confidence they build comes from skills that actually work.
What should my child wear to class?
A fitted t-shirt or rash guard and athletic shorts without pockets or zippers. We train no-gi, so you don't need to buy a traditional uniform (gi).
How often should my child train?
Twice a week is a great start: each age group trains Tuesday and Thursday. Consistency builds confidence, sharpens muscle memory, and keeps progress moving without burning out.
Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu safe for kids?
Yes. Every kids class is coach-led, age-grouped, and supervised. No random hires, no unsupervised drilling. Coach Jon is SafeSport Certified, the same abuse-prevention training standard required across Olympic youth sports, and every new student is paired with a trusted teammate so kids are never lost or thrown in blind.
What age groups do you teach?
We run specific classes for ages 5–14 in three groups: Little Ninjas (age 5, waitlist only), Kids (6–8), and Youth (9–14). This ensures they train with kids their own size and maturity level.
Do you offer a free trial?
Yes. Your child's first class is completely free. There is no drop-in fee and zero commitment to try it out.

409 S 22nd St, Suite 6, Heath, OH 43056. We're a short drive from Newark, Granville, Pataskala, Zanesville, and Mount Vernon.
What does it cost?
Kids classes are $125 a month, month to month, with a $75 signup fee. There is no long-term contract, and your child's first class is free.

What age can my child start?
Age 5. Five-year-olds start in Little Ninjas, which is waitlist only right now. Kids 6 to 8 and youth 9 to 14 can start any Tuesday or Thursday. We don't run classes for kids under 5.
Can jiu jitsu help a kid who is being bullied?
It can help a lot with confidence. Kids learn to stay calm when someone is in their space, to control a situation without throwing a punch, and to carry themselves like they belong. We also teach that walking away and telling an adult come first. If your child is dealing with bullying, let Coach Jon know before the first class.
