Boxing Classes in Heath, Ohio: Train with Coach Artie Douglas
Most people in the Newark and Heath area have no idea they can learn real boxing right here in Licking County, every Saturday morning, from a coach with a genuine connection to boxing history.
If you've been looking for boxing classes near you, here's what you need to know about our Saturday program at 10th Planet Newark.
Real boxing, not cardio boxing
There's a big difference between a cardio kickboxing class at a fitness gym and actual boxing instruction.
Cardio boxing is a workout set to music. You punch the air, you break a sweat, and you never really learn how to box. There's nothing wrong with that if a workout is all you want. But it isn't boxing.
What we run on Saturdays is the real thing. You learn stance, footwork, how to throw a proper jab, how to move your head, and how to defend yourself. It's technique first, built from the ground up, the same fundamentals you'd learn at a dedicated boxing gym. Over time you develop actual skill, not just conditioning.
Who coaches it
Our Saturday boxing is led by Coach Artie Douglas.
Artie is the son of Buster Douglas, the former heavyweight champion of the world and the man who famously knocked out Mike Tyson in 1990 in one of the biggest upsets in sports history. Boxing runs in the family, and Artie brings that knowledge to the mat every Saturday morning right here in Heath.
Having a coach with that kind of connection to the sport, teaching in a small gym in Licking County, is something most people in the area don't even realize is available to them. It is.
What a Saturday class looks like
Boxing runs Saturday mornings at 8:30 AM and it's open to all levels.
A typical session mixes boxing technique, conditioning, and controlled sparring. You'll drill fundamentals, work combinations, build your conditioning, and if and when you're ready, get controlled sparring reps in a safe environment. Beginners are never thrown into the deep end. You learn the basics first and progress at your own pace.
Whether you've never thrown a punch or you've boxed before and want to sharpen up, the class meets you where you are.
Great for grapplers too
If you already train jiu-jitsu, boxing is some of the best cross-training you can do.
Jiu-jitsu is a ground game. Boxing sharpens your standup, your footwork, your hand speed, and your comfort in the striking range. For anyone interested in a more complete martial arts skill set, or anyone who wants to understand the standup phase before a fight hits the ground, Saturday boxing is the perfect complement to your mat work.
That's why boxing is included with every 10th Planet Newark membership. Our grapplers can round out their game at no extra cost.
How to join
Boxing is included with any 10th Planet Newark membership. If you're not a member, you can drop in for the Saturday class separately.
